SEXUAL HARASSMENT IN KENYAN MEDIA



 

Sexual harassment in News rooms hinders the growth of journalists in Kenya. According to research by the WAN-IFRA women in News, Kenyan media lead in sexual harassment in Africa at 56%.

 Association of Media Women in Kenya (AMWIK) in partnership with UNESCO launched documentary on 'Speak out against sexual harassment in Kenyan media’ which is meant to help women have a convenient working space and also have an equal space for men and women in Media houses.

Ms. Winnie Obure, the founder of Teenseed Africa shared her experience where she was defiled at a young age.She states that there is need for protection and prevention in the world of work thus urges all women in media who are sexually abused to speak up or ask for agencies or organizations for help since there are policy instruments in Kenya pushing for addressing sexual harassment in Kenya.

During the panel discussion about sexual harassment in media to promote innovation, the panelists said the following;  

Sammy Muraya the project manager Journalists for Human Rights (JHR) revealed that they do training alongside KUJ and AMWIK and share the generic policy with media houses that don't have theirs.JHR also organizes training on gender equitable newsroom and go through the policy together to see what works and doesn't work for them.

Eric Oduor, the secretary general of Kenya Union Of Journalists said that KUJ is working to ensure convention 190 is passed in Kenya so we can have a conducive working environment free from the fear of sexual harassment.He also indicates that KUJ offers free legal support to all journalists.
